Daisy gazed around her untidy cottage and wondered where on earth to start. She’d promised Will the house would be ready for him to move in on Wednesday morning and there was a lot to do before then. He was going to take care of the house and garden, which would have the dual benefit of helping her out while saving him from going mad living with their parents. After he’d unpacked his things, Will would drive her into town to catch the train after lunch and she’d spend two days in London wrapping things up at the office before flying out on Saturday. Of course that all assumed she could escape from her mother’s tears long enough to get away.

You’d have thought she was going to Outer Mongolia instead of America. She had informed her mother they did have telephones in Tennessee, the postal service worked and her Dad’s computer received emails and had a webcam so they could talk and see each other on Skype. Lynne wouldn’t be shifted from her conviction that Daisy would fall in love with America and never return.

She could be right. Daisy berated herself. This was nothing more than a short-term job. Really? And the lure of a certain man has nothing to do with you going?

Daisy had exchanged multiple emails and texts with Sky, but hadn’t dared to ask what Nathaniel thought about her coming and her friend hadn’t mentioned her brother. Nashville was a decent-sized city so she should be able to avoid him … if she wanted to.

She mustn’t waste any more time thinking about things that might or might not happen. First she’d bag up all her rubbish and then make an effort to clean. Will might not belong to the Nathaniel Dalton school of cleanliness but he was ex-army and appreciated order. For herself she always found a little chaos in her living space helped with the creative process. Of course that could be a convenient excuse for being lazy. Maybe in Nashville she’d try a little harder.

Two hours later, exhausted and filthy she gave up. If Will wanted it spotless he could do it himself. Daisy was unable to resist the lure of going to her studio one last time and hurried off out the back door to run down through the garden. She opened the shed door and glanced around the half-empty space. She’d already sent on some of her supplies but the rest she’d replace when she arrived in Nashville.

This was the real core of her life, and one day she was determined to make her living at it full-time. Picking the right illustrators to work with a particular author and guiding the project to completion was satisfying in its own way but nothing matched the joy of seeing her own work in print. The Nashville job could open possibilities she might never get here and nothing was going to stop her. Not her clinging mother, her jealous sister or Nate. He’s never tried to stop you doing anything.
